·  Turn on Your Customers' "Buy Now" Switch

(part 9)

What is Your Unique Selling Point?

Last month we began talking about your "Unique Selling Point". This month, we continue on that theme.

Some very common (but in my opinion, poor) unique selling points are:

  • lowest price
  • best customer service
  • highest quality

I know you've seen these over and over again. They're not unique at all, are they? Everybody claims to have the lowest price, highest quality, and best customer service. But the fact is, nobody delivers on all three.

You can't have the highest quality and the lowest price. That's just counter to the laws of, well, the laws of something. It just can't be done.

You can't have the best customer service and the lowest price either. Customer service costs money. There's simply no way around that. The better your customer service, the higher your cost, and the higher you'll have to price your products in order to make a profit.

Having the lowest price is bad because everybody is competing for that title, and all it does is eat into your profits! Good customer service and high quality are expected. It's not a selling point. It's simply something that if you don't have it, you won't have a business for very long.

Try this exercise:

Write down everything that is good about your company and/or products/services. Then, think of services or other selling points you could add to improve your appeal to consumers.

Now, start getting rid of the common ones and start to focus on the most unique selling points of your company, or the selling points you may wish to add to your company.

Now, what is the one, most appealing thing about your company that no one else has (or that your competitors fail to market)? Once you know what your most unique and appealing selling point is, build your marketing around that selling point.

That unique selling point is the answer to the consumer's question of "What's in it for me?" It is your ultimate benefit to your customers.
